“Shine bright like a diamond?”

It’s a fun song until one realises that in fact, it’s their personality they want shining like diamonds and not necessarily their face. There is a difference between “glowing skin” and “shining skin”. Glowing skin is one that is radiant, evenly toned and hydrated. When the skin is shining on the other hand, it could signal something else; oily skin. Luckily, we know all about that.

Oily skin is characterized by visible (enlarged) pores, shine and greasiness throughout the day. It is prone to acne breakouts resulting to blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and ladies, if your make-up slides off easily upon application, it may be a sign.

Oily skin is mainly caused by excess oil being produced by the sebaceous gland, or shall we call it “the oil factory”? These are attached to the hair follicles and secrete sebum, a fatty substance meant to protect the skin from bacterial infections. Because of its oily quality, it also acts as a natural moisturizer. Other factors such as weather pattern changes, stress, puberty or other hormonal imbalances also play a part.

“Mirror-mirror on the wall, what to do with all this oil?!”

Normally when one sees a pimple or blackhead, the natural reaction is to want to get rid of it – spend days on end popping or squeezing and when the skin is greasy or shiny, use a product that dries out the skin. Stop! Do not make the mistake of falling for the idea of “affirmative action”. Taking care of oily skin is as easy as cutting butter with a hot knife and, “hydrophilic” ought to form part of your personality.

Wash the face twice daily, tone and continue moisturizing that skin. Using harsh products that dry out the skin leads to it secreting even more oil, to counter the less. Lightly exfoliate – this combats the build-up of oil which can cause skin cells to become trapped in the pores and lead to acne blemishes. I shall say this one more time, leave that pimple alone! No squeezing, popping or picking. I for one personally know the results thereof, not so nice.

“Make-up or no make-up? That is the question.”

Here’s a little advice for those of us conflicted by our oily skin and whether or not to use make-up or not: There are two different types of make-up, oil-based (waterproof) and non-waterproof. It is advisable for one with oily skin to use the non-waterproof kind. Why? Oil-based make-up will lead to your pores clogging, causing more acne breakouts. Also, we know that after an exhausting day at the office one only thinks of throwing themselves in bed and drifting away to la-la land. Ensure that you wash your face before hitting the sack, your skin will thank you.

Lamarie Professional: Pro Series + Bio- Cleanse Facial Wash

Pro-Series:

Bio- Cleanse Facial Wash (from our Bio- Series)

I personally call this one our ‘all-in-one’. The facial wash is slightly acidic and together with the Witch Hazel extract – bye-bye acne! It’s packed with Vitamins A, E, B, silicon mineral and iodine. This combination helps you prevent further acne by dissolving the excess oil produced by the sebum while maintaining a healthy skin. It helps prevent dryness and tightness. The Bio- Cleanse Facial Wash also makes for a great make-up remover. Bonus!

Pro- Tone Facial Toner

“Call in the troops!”

The lactic acid, also termed the “milky complexion” dissolves acne, improves the skin’s texture and hydration levels while serine strengthens the skin’s natural moisturizing effect. Yes, oily skin still needs to stay hydrated and moisturized. Wrinkles? Forget about them, they’re taken care of with this one. The chamomile extract comforts sensitive skin and improves the skin’s resistance to environmental pollution. Think of it as a group of soldiers barricading the street to keep out rebels. It also is an effective cure for inflammation and allergies.

Instant- Acne Combat Serum

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

To be used only on specific areas of the skin to combat acne. Apply in the morning and evening after cleansing and toning your skin. Apply only on the acne affected area until the serum is absorbed. The serum is antibacterial, balances oil secretion, boosts cell regeneration, and prevents further acne and pimples. You may be tempted to use it on your whole face but as the Americans say, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. The serum is only to be used on the specific troublesome area.
